Hofstra University integrates AI-driven VR simulation into Perfusion Medicine curriculum
Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies becomes one of only three programs in the world to bring high-fidelity virtual reality to the operating room.
HEMPSTEAD, NY //
The Master of Science in Cardiovascular Sciences and Perfusion Medicine program at Hofstra University has officially integrated AI-driven virtual reality simulation into its core clinical training curriculum.
This revolutionary deployment makes Hofstra one of only three universities globally to offer virtual reality platforms specialized for cardiovascular perfusion workflows.
Co-directed by Edward Delaney, the 21-month master’s program utilizes this immersive technology alongside traditional classroom lectures, low-fidelity task trainers, and state-of-the-art operating room simulation labs.
The cloud-native Virmedex software platform allows students to safely build crucial muscle memory for setting up, managing, and weaning cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) pumps and extracorporeal life support (ECLS) circuits.
By placing trainees inside zero-risk virtual environments, faculty members can introduce high-stress clinical emergencies—such as lines collapsing, air embolism vectors, or catastrophic component failures—ensuring that students develop critical diagnostic and situational instincts before participating in live clinical rotations across Northwell Health’s tertiary adult cardiac care centers.
